2004 Setup for 144 MHz

In March 2004 I have built up my new antenna for 144 MHz. I decided to go for a 9 element DK7ZB antenna of 2.5 wavelength. I have mounted the antenna on top of my telescopic tower and is about 11m above ground. It has a fixed elavation of 15 degrees. When the sun is in range, I can receive some sunnoise but I have not measured it so far. I have installed a small black&white TV camera just below the 2m antenna.

I was only QRV on sunday. I wanted to look for CW stations today and I am very glad to work IK3MAC. I first thought there was a tropo signal, but the signal was from the moon and completely Q5 and up to 539. Unbelievable. I tried to fiddle around with LINRAD and other software with very good succes. Great to "see" CW stations, put a filter on and copy them easily. Due to the big number of "birdies" it is hard to find the stations. LINRAD had the big advantage to see 20 kHz at a time.

First QSO

On 21 March 2004 I could make the first EME QSO using this antenna. On the internet I read that I2FAK has been calling CQ on 144.120 MHz. The moon was at about 23 degrees above the horizon and the sun only 9 degrees away. I could copy I2FAK immediately using the ARGO spectrum analyser program. Switching to the WSJT mode JT65B I could immediately decode Franco's signal. I called with 120W at the antenna and within a few minutes the QSO was made.
