Sunset on 17 May 2007

D:

Today it came to my mind: it must be the first day after new moon today. Just a short view to my calender showed me: yes it is. New moon happened at 19.27UT at the 16 May 2007. As I am not able to see the horizon so close from my garden I moved to the baltic sea beach some meters on. In the hope of catching the small moon I set up my camera. After a wonderful sunset I started imaging four minutes after sunset the estimated position of the moon - et voila - I got it right on the first image.

Only 4 Minutes after Sunset

I started making images 4 minutes after moonset. I could not see the moon visually. Later at home I discovered the small moon right on the first image.

Outlook for June

In June the situation will more dramatic, with the moon only 6.5° above the horizon after sunset. It will stay bright all night long and I am not sure, if I will be able to see the moon. But hopefully - if weather permits - I can find the moon with the camera.
