I went to Per's station to see, if I could work some of EME guys around. Weather was very lousy with very high winds that forced me to go QRT again after 2 hours of operation. Activity was low but first of all I wanted to "feel" the new transistor PA working. I have never heard such big echoes before. Even FM echoes are almost noise free.

I wanted to be QRV for a longer time at this weekend, but I could not use the station on Saturday. So I was limited from moonrise until about 14 UT on Sunday afternoon. Even the PA is mounted at the feed there is still noise enough in the shack, which is a sort of a container beside the dish. After two hours the headphones ceased functioning on one side and I had to listen to the speaker. That made life really hard. Nevertheless I worked 21 stations. I am not sure if I copied OM6AE right, but I got so many R's. Per DK7LJ wanted to be on with DL0SHF call in the evening, but I do not have a feedback so far. In the next future I will make the station ready for WSJT.

09.10.2004 ARRL Contest 1296 MHz 1st leg

I drove to DL0SHF early in the morning after a quite short sleep due to our baby ... This time I had taken some parts of my equipment including my notebook and my headphones. It worked well. I used SPECTRAN as visual aid and the built in filter when signals were marginal like OH3MCK. I am very pleased to work them. Signal was very weak but I could copy. Funny enough 23cm EME signals can look VERY different from the ONE birdie on 1296.025 which was a clean signal. EME signals ALL looked spread over at least 20 Hz. Very easy to see. Exept a few stations I called on their CQ, I stayed calling CQ on 1296.027. The station worked without any problems with about 1 kW at the feed of the 9,5m solid dish. It was big fun to work so many old friends again. Hopefully I can be active again on 23 cm on 4/5 December, where I do have some other events I have to go to also. Unclear is the situation in the 13cm and up weekend, which is almost full with other commitments. Perhaps I can make it on for a few hours.

04.12.2004 ARRL Contest 1296 MHz 2nd leg

The contest is over and I ended up with 57*35 = 199500.There were many other things to do during this 2nd leg of the ARRL contest, but I did not want to miss it completely. I am very pleased to work a lot more stations. It is a pity that I missed the JA window, but there was no chance to be at DL0SHF, which is 45 minutes of drive from my home. I found conditions somewhat mixed with strong libration fading over long periods. Funny enough I had to fight some weak birdies in the EME portion of the 23cm band. I never had this before. I received some complaints about that our receiver does not work OK but we receive very good Sunnoise and Moonnoise is also there where it should be. I believe many stations copy DL0SHF very strong and there may be some discrepancy, because there is almost NO feedline loss from the PA to the antenna while most stations have 1 or 2 dB of loss. On the other hand I found weak stations calling me some 4 Khz away from me on top of another station. So I did not answer. Sometimes CQs were answered by a couple of weak stations on almost the same frequency. Even with the aid of the DSP filter and the Spectran program I could not distinguish between the stations. So I am very pleased to have worked W6XY with their 20W. So it looks like things are working. Even I had only limited time, I am very pleased with result in the ARRL contest and I had great fun operating DL0SHF - as single operator. Per DK7LJ did some QSOs in the "13cm and Up part" and I only received a small notice paper with the QSO dates on.

QSL cards can go to me and will be answered immediately.
